Finally, A Taste of Fall in Florida - October 2020
Up north, fall has been in the air for a while and many places have already seen some snow. But here on the edge of the tropics, things move more slowly. Seasonal changes are gradual, subtle, almost tentative. Here, October signals just the start of those changes.
In October our waters are still comfortable for swimming and snorkeling. And there are still days on the ocean that are glassy, calm and peaceful. But gradually our southeasterly summer winds give way to northerly winter winds, dropping our humidity to levels in which humans can actually live. As the northerlies push cooler water our way, air temps drop too, signaling the start of fall in Florida.
We haven’t yet felt much seasonal change. But we will. Our day light hours are noticeably shorter, and the sun no longer reaches quite so high in the sky. Huge schools of baitfish are moving southward through our coastal waters. Manatees will soon be swimming south in search of warmer waters. Birds (and Snowbirds!) from the northeast and midwest are starting their annual southward treks to South Florida for the winter too!
October heralds a season of change everywhere. Hope you can get outside and enjoy some of the natural beauty of The Palm Beaches and South Florida this month!
